Shark risk awareness

There are specific best practices when it comes to managing shark risk in Reunion Island. They apply to all people entering the waters around the island, particularly surfers and those doing other wave-powered activities. Just as a reminder, following a prefectural decree

which has been renewed annually since 2013, it is forbidden to swim or do any activities using wave power in the first 300 metres from the shoreline.  For sports using wave power, safety is ensured by specialist teams in experimental zones (ZONEXs):

  • The VRR Shark Lookout Program provides users with collective safety measures, specifically within ZONEXs in surf spots in the municipalities of Trois-Bassins, Saint-Paul and Étang-Salé.
  • The Leu Tropical Surf Team association and its Water Patrol provides a collective safety measure within ZONEXs in surf spots in the municipality of Saint-Leu, but users must equip themselves with shark repellents / deterrents.
  • For swimming, shark exclusion nets have been installed at 3 spots: Boucan-Canot, Roches-Noires and Etang-Salé.
